      • STUDY for the Quiz for Class Session:
        • Quiz Study Guide: The Fundamental Principles of Interaction
          1. 💪Affordances: A relationship between the properties of an object and the capabilities of the agent that determine just how the object could possibly be used.
          2. ⚠️ Signifiers: Any perceivable indicator that communicates appropriate behavior to a person.
          3. 🔒 Constraints: Powerful clues, limiting the set of possible actions.
          4. 🗺️ Mappings: The relationship between a control and its results is easiest to learn wherever there is an understandable mapping between the controls, the actions, and the intended result.
          5. 🗯️ Feedback: Communicating the results of an action. Must be immediate. Must be planned: All actions need to be confirmed, but in a manner that is unobtrusive. Must also be prioritized, so that unimportant information is presented in an unobtrusive fashion, but important signals are presented in a way that does capture attention.
          6. 🧠 Conceptual Model An explanation, usually highly simplified, of how something works. It doesn’t have to be complete or even accurate as long as it is useful.
        • Quiz Study Guide: The Seven Stages of Action
          1. 🥅 Form the Goal (“What do I want to accomplish?”)
          2. 🤔 Form the Intention (“What are alternatives?”)
          3. 🎯 Specify the Action (“What can I do?”)
          4. 🔫 Execute the Action (“How do I do it?”)
          5. 🌎 Perceive the World (“What happened?”)
          6. 🗺️ Interpret the World (“What does it mean?”)
          7. 📋 Evaluate the Outcome (“Is this okay?”)
        • Quiz:
  3. The Seven Stages of Action
  4. Fundamental Principles of Interaction
  5. What is UX? (Class Introduction)

Projects

  1. Project 1: Hidden Affordances, Secret Constraints

    Design Brief

Create a simple printed and bound photographic booklet presenting the photo documentation that you collected of hidden affordances and secret constraints through your user design field research. The collection must include a unique and interesting title, and images must be accompanied by caption and citation text.

    Research Reference:
    Design Precedent:
  2. Project 2: Status Update, Status Symbol

    Design Brief

Develop and design a proposal for a physical interface that provides a novel and unique visual representation of status.

  3. Project 3: User Friendly, User Friction

    Design Brief

Create a series of interface and interaction proposals that critically examine the design maxim of “User Friendly”. How does design intentionally slow-down perception, nurture patience, encourage reflective examination, frustrate, or baffle the user?

  4. Project 4: Extreme Apps for Extreme Users

    Design Brief

Develop and design a proposal for an app or online service, specifically responding to the wants and needs of a niche or subgroup of “extreme users” that you identified through your research process.
